What to wish for when no one is looking…

The poet Mary Oliver asks

Tell me, what it is you plan to do
with your one wild and precious life?

from New and Selected Letters

I do not know the answer to this question.  What I know today is that I have right here and this moment and no more or no less.

If I’m honest with myself I can look at the knots in my life and see them and wish they were not there.  There are the people i have hurt, the tangles I’ve made with relationships, things said (or not said).  And that’s just for starters.

Last week I read something about sand not being able to go back up in the hour glass.  I can’t change those things that have happened but, wow, how I wish that regrets could go back where they belong.

I wish I hadn’t said…

I wish I had said…

I wish I had paid better attention to…

I wish I had listened closer when…

I wish…
